INTRODUCTION

Department of Educational management offers a four-year Bachelor Science/Education (B.Sc; Ed) degree. Instruction is by course work and seminar. source assessment consists of continuous assessment and an course examination. Students are required to take any approved combination or course as Senate on the recommendation of the faculty of Education may determine from time to time

HISTORY

Department of Educational Management was created on October 1st along with three other Departments in the faculty. Prior to this, and other faculties of the University, the department of Educational Management, along with the other departments of the Faculty, shares the vision and mission statement of the faculty of Education. It houses students who offer social science courses in a four- year academic programme for the award of the Bachelor of Social Science in Education Ed) degree. Students of the Department choose their teaching subjects from Economics, Political Science and Administrative studies, Geography and Environmental management, and Accounting.

REQUIREMENTS

Candidates are required to have five credits at the GCE, SSCE, NECO, including a credit pass in English Language, Mathematics and Economics more than two sittings. Success in the UTME examination at a recommended cut-off mark is also required. In addition, candidate must the University PUTME Screening Test. Candidates can also qualify admission; if they obtain a credit level pass in the University of Port Harcourt certificate programme or from any other recognized University.

To develop in staff and students the spirit of hard work, discipline and other values needed for the development of a nation as well as commitment to national ideals.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

Develop skilled educational managers for the primary and post primary   levels of education.
Develop professionally competent teachers in a defined field of Study.
Prepare students who can take postgraduate studies in a defined professional area of Education Social Science.
Train students who can adopt their managerial skills to the challenges of Nigerian economy

SOCIAL SCIENCE)

EDU 202.1 CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

The course examines the nature of the classroom system, its organization, planning and resource provision for effective classroom management. The course will also discuss the teacher’ skill in effective classroom communication, discipline, maintenance behaviour, school record and the Legal caution in classroom management

EDU 303.1 SUPERVISION & LEADERSHIP BEHAVIOUR IN EDUCATION

The course involves an examination of the purpose and strategies of supervision. Students will also be exposed to the trends in supervision and accepted procedures for observation. The course will also expose students to the basic approaches to leadership and models and how they relate particularly to education organization. It will also examine organizational leadership against the background to the key organizational processes and characteristics such as communication and decision making processes; motivational and job satisfaction force; goal setting and control processes; control dynamics; leader-member relations; and organizational climate.

EDU 303.2 BASIC STATISTICS AND RESEARCH METHODS

The course is designed to acquaint students with the nature and scope of statistics. It covers basic descriptive statistics-data collection, measures of frequency distribution, central tendency and dispersion. Students are introduced to inferential statistics, parametric and non parametric tests as a means of scientific study. Introduction to research- definitions and values. Types of research, descriptive, experimental, quasi-experimental, phenomenology etc, and steps in conducting research, problems formulation, methodology and data analysis and reporting. Documentation in various research formats, Harvard citation, Vancouver (numbering) and American psychology Association (APA) style will be presented.

EDU 305.2 LAW AND POLITICS OF EDUCATION

The focus of this course is education law and politics as the basis of educational administration. It will expose students to critical analysis of the educational law of Nigeria issues and problem in legislation for

conduct for teachers. The political basis of education and policy formulation in Nigeria and educational policy analysis will also be examined.

EDU 400.1 MANAGEMENT IN EDUCATION

The course is meant to provide basic knowledge of administration processes, principles and practices of educational management for both majors and non-majors of educational management, techniques and processes and their application to the day to day running of primary and secondary schools.

GENERAL UNIVERSITY COURSES

These consist of general studies and community service courses. The purpose of General studies Courses is to generate in the students a continuous awareness and understanding of contemporary society as well as the historical and cultural origins of the people of Nigeria. Community Service Courses are field projects directed towards the community. The objective of the project is to involve both staff and students in a practical way with some of the problems of society as well as with effort to provide solutions to them, and inculcate and develop in both staff and students, a consciousness of their responsibilities to society and the gratification of service to others.

EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE

Definition: Examination malpractice shall be defined as all forms of cheating which directly or indirectly falsify performance, cheating oul an examination hall and any involvement in all illegal examination-related

offences. Forms of cheating are categorized as follows:

  • Copying from one-another/exchanging questions/answer sheets.
  • Bringing in prepared answers, copying from textbooks, notebooks laboratory specimens or other instructional aids smuggled into the examination hall.
  • Collaboration with an invigilator/lecturer where it involves the lecturer providing written oral answer to a student in the examination hall.
  • Oral/written communication between/amongst students.
  • Bringing in prepared answers written on any part of the body
  • Receiving information whether written or oral from any person(s) outside an examination hall.

Punishment for Examination malpractice

  • A student found guilty of any form of examination malpractice in Section A has the result in the course cancelled and suspended for one semester for a first offence. Suspension for one session is the punishment for a second offence.
  • A student found guilty of any form of examination malpractice in section B has result in the cancelled and is suspended for one session for the first offence. Expulsion from the University is the punishment for a second offence.
  • A student found guilty of any offence in section C is expelled from the university, Member of staff involved in aiding and abetting students in examination malpractice should be made to appear before an investigation panel. If the member of staff is found guilty, the report should be sent to the appropriate Disciplinary Committee.
